REFLECTIONS OF AN INDIAN DANCER
Reflections of an Indian Dancer is a cross-arts production consisting of a solo dance performance accompanied by a recorded soundtrack of spoken word, written and performed by the performer, Sooraj Subramaniam.
The work is anchored in three exquisite solo pieces that serve as an introduction to the Indian dance traditions in which Subramaniam is trained: Bharatanayam, Odissi and Kathak.
Bringing the work straight into the twenty-first century is the enlightening and at times startling spoken-word soundtrack that accompanies his movement enabling new audiences to access these highly narrative dance styles. Subramaniam’s deeply personal and often poetic reflections on his life journey as a dancer transport the audience into the interior world of the performer, inviting them to explore not only the dancer’s but also their own sense of identity.
